Undergraduate Steel Structure Design Project | Civil Engineering
This undergraduate civil engineering project focused on the code-based design of an industrial factory shed at Kolkata. The problem required the design of a steel factory shed including truss bracing, gantry girder, column with connection, base-plate foundation design, and general arrangement drawings.
The project used structural design data including a 12 m truss span, 4 m column spacing, 48 m shed length, 500 kN crane capacity, EOT crane loading, Fe-410 steel, and bolted connections. The work included truss load analysis under dead, live, and wind loads; purlin and truss member design; rafter and eaves bracing design; gantry section design; stepped column design; and base-plate design.
The project referenced IS 800, IS 875 Part 3, SP 6, SP 38, and standard steel-design methods. It strengthened my early foundation in structural load calculation, steel member selection, connection checks, wind-load interpretation, gantry girder behavior, and engineering drawing preparation.

My Role
Completed the undergraduate design report and calculation workflow, including structural load analysis, steel member design, bracing and gantry design checks, base-plate design, and drawing preparation.
Key Outcomes
- Designed an industrial factory shed concept for Kolkata.
- Performed truss load analysis for dead load, live load, and wind load.
- Designed purlins, principal rafters, ties, struts, and sling members.
- Designed rafter and eaves-level bracing.
- Designed gantry girder components for EOT crane loading.
- Included stepped column and base-plate design.
- Prepared general arrangement and truss-related drawings.
- Applied IS 800, IS 875 Part 3, SP 6, and SP 38 references.
